Pedagogies

Asset-based pedagogies offer a counter narrative to deficit ideology outcomes by valuing students’ insights, languages, and cultural practices (Flint & Jaggers, 2021). The students would not be measured by the standard of any expectations and would not receive any comparison to the aptness of technical abilities within this pedagogical approach.

Pedagogies of Liberation

According to Freire, “we all acquire social myths which have a dominant tendency, and so learning is a critical process which depends upon uncovering real problems and actual needs” (Freire Institute, n.d.). I hope for our intellect and our imaginations to forge new and liberatory ways of knowing, thinking, and being—to work for change.

Art as Experience

John Dewey (1938) wrote about experience and its relationships to learning and teaching: "Every experience affects for better or worse the attitudes which help decide the quality of further experiences" (p. 37). I aim to construct lesson plans that provide interactions for my students to continuously discover insights in their experience and what is learned from the process.

Funds of Knowledge

Funds of knowledge are what “students bring with them every day, which extend beyond the context of the classroom and into the students’ homes and communities” (Moll, 1992, as cited in Constance, 2022). It can be a strategy to explore the homes and, therefore, the hearts and minds of the students.

Practice of Freedom

In Teaching Critical Thinking, bell hooks (2010) addresses education as the practice of freedom by explaining that we use “our intellect and our imaginations to forge new and liberatory ways of knowing, thinking, and being, to work for change” (p. 170).

Constructive Pedagogy

This constructive pedagogy allowed the students to create their own understanding of the world around them (Twinkl, n.d.). Through this approach the students could “experience the world and reflect upon those experiences, they build their own representations and incorporate new information into their pre-existing knowledge” (University at Buffalo, n.d.).
